At least two people died in Iringa Region in the separate incidents including a one-and-half- year-old baby who drown to death in the rice irrigation scheme channel at Pawaga in Iringa District.
The one year old child, Anastazia Julius died yesterday after dropping into the rice irrigation canal water while her mother was busy chasing birds away from her rice field at Itunudu Village, Itunudu Ward in Iringa District, Iringa Region.
Iringa Regional Police Commander (RPC), Assistance Commission of Police (ACP), Ramadhani Mungi, confirmed the incidence which occurred at around 19:00hrs at Itunudu Village in Iringa Rural District of Iringa Region.
According to the Itunudu Ward Executive Officer (WEO), Abri Mkilia, the mother of the dead child was at her rice farm, since it is almost harvest season, she was busy chasing away destructive birds that were eating rice in the fields.
He said that the mother of the child goes to the rice farm everyday with her baby but after reaching the area (farm) she puts her baby in the makeshift hut to rest and off she went out in the business of chasing destructive birds that were eating rice in her fields.
"When she returned from chasing the destructive birds from the rice farms to the baby she left in the makeshift hut, she noticed that her baby was nowhere to be seen and she started called the baby by her
name but there was no answer," explained ward executive officer.

Mkilia illustrated that, the mother after looking here and there she saw her baby floating on water in the rice irrigation scheme canal dead, and she started calling for help.
Pawaga is famous in rice irrigation farming together with Idodi in Iringa district, Iringa region and it is almost approching fo rthe harvest period.
"I was the first person to be informed by that mother and I helped her taking out the drowned baby from the water but unfortunately she was already dead before we could remove her from the water of the irrigation scheme waterways. And I reported the matter to the police, "he said.
In the second incidence, a man died instantly after he was allegedly stabbed with a knife in the throat by his friend at Ibangamoyo Village in Iringa district, Iringa region.
RPC told journalists yesterday that Lazaro Ngasi (28), a resident of Kalenga in the district Iringa who was killed by his colleague with a knife well they were drinking local brew 'Ulanzi' at one of the local pub over a woman.
He narrated that Lazaro Ngasi (deceased) and his friend Agialy Mkuvusa were having fan together at Feristus Shangamiki's Local Pub (klabuni), Ibangamoyo Village when the wrangle erupted over a woman, in what the RPC described as a love jealous.
However, police have launched a manhunt to bring the culprit to book and late on arraign him in court to answer criminal charges.
